If you're armored but not wearing a helmet, you're not armored. I do like to think that people in movies are actually aware of main charcaters' plot armor and let them go in front for exactly that reason

Once you are the capitol you dont loose your trade caravans the cities under you send the caravans to you instead of the capitol. so you should still be seeing them, It could be that its too dangerous to make the journey though.
