Unicorn Overlord: How Ogre Battle Mechanics Were Evolved (Mostly.)

This is shockingly the brief version. The amount of things they’ve improved on is honestly staggering, especially with how brilliant many of those implementations were. The Legion mechanic started this thought train, and yet it became this long. There’s just more and more. I love this.

0:00 Introduction
2:02 MOTBQ Formations
4:02 Box Art
4:49 Mermaids
6:48 Mounts (To clarify, MOTBQ any flying slot made the team fly. In OB64, you needed the whole team to fly. In UO, the commander has to fly.)
9:15 Lanes (I forgot to mention how Symphony of War managed to find a use for a third row through ambushes. For that matter, I forgot to mention that OB64 started the wood line stealth mechanic.)
11:00 Permadeath
11:53 Fireworks
13:14 MOTBQ Intro and Versions
15:20 Some Class Comparisons
16:20 Towns and Focus
17:40 Reputation
18:45 Stamina and Cards
19:55 Game Flow (To get the best of both worlds, you would go back in free roam to claim towns after the fight.)
22:58 Cockatrice
23:51 Tropes Aversion
24:48 Game Flow MOTBQ again
25:32 I Command An Army of Tigers
26:00 Tarot Cards Became Field Items (In retrospect, pierce moves and range swaps serve the same role as Moon. Fool and Fortune are mentioned as similar to Ash and Barricades because they can be used for emergency HQ saves.)
28:20 Commands into Gambits
29:48 Ogre Battle 64 Time, Baby! (What you realistically came here for.)
31:20 Ringed Walls and Wall Mechanics
32:00 Just Ogre 64 Things
33:55 Scarlett was in Ogre Battle 64
35:35 Equipment
36:55 Speedruns and Combo Attacks, but I get distracted and go off on a crackhead tangent
38:00 Items, Gear, Slots, and Classes
40:25 Random Director note
41:10 Ogre Vibes
42:10 Uniforms, Side quests, Hidden Content, and Towns, kinda
43:00 The 3×3 (Symphony of War added a stealth ambush mechanic, otherwise this mechanic doesn’t add much here.)
44:00 Big Units
45:12 Art
46:00 Legacy of Skulltopus (Aka squad decapitation)
47:17 Zombification and Permadeath
47:50 More Item Mechanics
49:00 The Dangers of Unlimited Items (Funny note, you could infinite item dupe in 64 on complete accident.)
51:40 HELL YEAH LEGIONS (Rest, Fatigue, Combo, and Support Attack mechanics)
57:16 Synergy mechanic (The longer a squad works together, the better their odds of triggering a combo. One held item boosts this.)
58:30 Challenge Run Oddities
59:00 HELL YEAH LEGIONS CONTINUED (This video is a long excuse to talk about Legions.)
1:00:00 Death Chicken
1:01:00 Why Death Chicken Matters (Why Explained Mechanics turn BS into Gold)
1:05:20 Birthdays and Gifts (Feels like maybe Rapport will replace this)
1:07:10 Mental Anxiety Improvements
1:08:35 Map Mechanics and Size
1:10:24 Visual Notes
1:11:11 Managed to get an hour in before mentioning TOR
1:11:27 Custom Names
1:12:46 Pendra, the Magic Machine Gun, and how it became Valor, kinda (Hear me out)
1:14:59 Hugo Briefings and Josen Lessons
1:16:40 Hidden Levels, Age Mechanics…this was in the wrong spot.
