You could always get something like a Tile device as you can have them make a noise by simply using the app, although not sure what the range of them is.
Definitely could be selective hearing…. I would assume since hes getting older that he may be losing a little hearing though. Getting old is hard ..😏😏

I'd try a rescue whistle like the kind attached to a life preserver. I use one in a crowded ice rink where I guard and it gets EVERYONES attention. Or a find my keys beeper.
I think you may well be seeing what we call 'age related selected hearing' and if it is that then Sherpa is choosing to act like he did not hear a request or command to do something he is either not feeling up to doing or just does not want to do.
But before deciding that Sherpa is just hearing what he wants to hear there are some things to check.
One of the best things to do is start keeping a diary of when he appears not to be hearing things and when he does things that lets you know he is. What sounds he reacts to and which ones he does not. Does he sleep through all sounds, unless nudged or touched or hears food being prepared?
Check with your vet to see if any of the various medication he is taking can have auditory side effects. Dogs are really good a blocking auditory side effects like tintinitis or humming or buzzing caused by medications and when they block those sounds they block almist everything else in the same ranges including human voices.
Also ask your vet to check his ears, deep down in the horizontal canal to make sure that here is not infection or blockage acting like an ear plug that needs to be cleaned out. Senior dogs often have issue getting that horizontal canal to drain and can have problems hearing as everything can sound like they are hearing underwater.
There are various ways to test a canines hearing, from some simple things any vet can do, to more technological methods that you probably need to be seen at a specialty vet for.
Sometimes a vet will just go ahead with a good ear wash and see if that solves it, but having a diary from youn listing those times when Sherpa does not seem to hear or react can also help you figure out what is going on. It really may not be anything more than some plugged ear canals, or senior selective hearing, but its worth looking into as it could possibly point to other things you would want to catch early.
What about those little vibrating box that attaches to dog collar that do a quick shudder to let your dog know your calling them. Some use those to train their dogs with. Ceasar millan dog trainer has used them.

Jamie how is Sherpa's joints, I feel if he's struggling to go up and down it may be that. I'm just curious. I'd suggest a vibration collar, it vibrates when you trigger it. it's humane and doesn't rely on sound, which can work if he does lose his hearing, and you can train him to use the vibration as a trigger.
I think he wants he just wants to do what he wants to do he's getting old, he's conserving his energy by not listening to you.

I live on 15 acres out in the middle of nowhere. I use a small whistle that is extremely loud. Got it from Amazon. It works great for my five dogs when they go out exploring our pastures and woods. My neighbor that is a half a mile away can even hear it.
