Aliens, are an interesting bunch. The reality is we have no idea, at least collectively, if they are out there, and we also do not know what form they would take. We are carbon based life, but does that mean all life is carbon based? In the events of Virus, Humanity would come across a species that was set on invading Earth. It could be that the process or processes normally hosting the electrical energy lifeform are akin to or along the lines of ball lightning.
So based on what I've seen from your video so far, and the things your pondering about the alien species and how it works, and why the bodies of the humans are left the way they are… I have my theory to add to yours.
I come from the perspective that the spiritual is scientific. That God and science are one and the same and that our souls are actually part of an electromagnetic spectrum and existence. Like how you mentioned the aliens have found a way to live outside the physical realm but are still in the universe. I perfectly understood that as how a soul or ghost could operate if detached from a body or how the existence of Heaven might actually just be a parallel world or plane of existence but still connected. There's a theory I've heard somewhere about how supposedly if we were capable of using 100% of our brains, that we wouldn't even need a physical body, that it would be that a person would become energy.
While this seems to be partially rooted in the debunked theory that we only use 10% of our brain, the basic idea of concept is there. Our soul is rooted to our physical form. the electromagnetic impulses and the presence of the human soul are one and the same. We are electrical currents but have a "meat suit" to fit over our soul.
You also mentioned the wonders of how the individual neurons in the brain seem to know how and when to communicate with one another in what orders to bring memories and all that. I believe this is actually not part of the body but a function of the soul within the physical form. one can not exist without the other on this fallen plane of existence in Man's imperfect world of God's prefect creation.
All this to say, how you mentioned why it seems odd the alien species and virus keeps human parts of the body on the machines, like the processers in side the hollowed out brain. It is possible, (though I doubt the movie makers were thinking along these lines), that it has to do with the soul attached to the flesh. Should the person die, the soul leaves the body and the machines would be unable to operate the flesh components effectively without the presence of the soul that keeps things functional. A person's soul would seem to stay with the largest amount of flesh to a body still alive. There is a whole other conversation here on if someone who's brain dead still has their soul within the body but that's neither here nor there.
the machines and virus may be incapable of operating on their own without flesh and the presence of a soul to keep the flesh active, as that may be the link between intelligence and artificial intelligence with how it may operate or not. say the virus replaced every part of the human body with a machine… it would just be a machine. varying degrees of artificial intelligence or not but incapable of being more than a robot. a mindless drone. However the presence of a human soul, could boost the robot's ability to think or behave with actual intelligence.
or it could be that the alien race described, how you mentioned they live in an energy plane of existence, could behave like a soul themselves. unable to take physical form, even in a robot as you can not possess a robot as a soul. However a living body of flesh and blood, already designed by God to hold a soul… is another story. Perhaps the virus takes over a human body and replaces parts of it with robotics to make the person brain dead, but their soul still there. hence circling back to my earlier comment on if a brain dead person may still have a soul attached to their still living and breathing body. which to a degree I believe it does.
the energy alien soul is likely unable to possess a person's body with a fully intact soul that has access to a functioning human brain and can think for itself. thus, the machines inside the brain, cause the person to be "brain dead", however there is still enough of the brain left to run bodily functions, keep the person breathing and or technically living but where the soul is unable to fire the neurons and engage memories or emotions, unable to have the body think for the soul. a brain dead person, with their soul still attached, but now the energy virus soul alien, is able to take the place of the soul in bodily function, augmented by robotic parts and puppet the body as if it's the original soul. which would not work if the body died to the point the original soul would leave the meat suit.
so it is my theory based on what you presented here that this is the reason for the aliens to behave this way. they are beings of electromagnetic souls. In order to interact with the human world, they have to possess a body that already can be used by a human soul, but the human spirit is too strong for them to possess a living person, and they body relies on a functioning soul too much for them to possess someone brain dead without machines helping. The machine parts serve as a bridge between the soul aliens and the human body that is rendered brain dead, but still able to function while the original hosts soul is trapped in limbo, unable to think or feel emotions but going through the motions of keeping the body alive while the alien takes over cognitive function.

This movie took some ideas from moon trap. Basically alien brain thing that looks like a beetle shell crash lands and uses corpses and mechanical parts to make killer robots or some crap.
