The latest Newspoll shows a majority of Australians would support a move to replace retired coal-fired power plants with small modular nuclear reactors.
The poll revealed that 55 per cent of all voters supported the move, however around 31 per cent were against it.
With 16 per cent of voters said they were unsure.
People aged between 18 to 35 showed the highest support for the move to small-scale nuclear power.
Shadow Climate Change and Energy Minister Ted O’Brien sat down with Sky News Australia to discuss nuclear power.

crap could imagine the people u asked lol
Living in a rural area most around me say leave the coal fired power. State the latest in coal fire has low emissions. Co2 lvls are fine and plants have never been healthier. Wind turbines create depression and can't recycle and never give back what they take and require huge amounts of oil. Solar can't recycle. Try making a greenhouse and add co2 it's plant food/fertiliser. The concrete jungles we make impact and make crazy weather. Black roves in massive houses require cooling in a dry arid country. Even our caravans are becoming blacker. It only seems to be the people that idley watch msm at the end of a long work day that state this. Almost like the droves locked in watching their t.v about covid vax wanted a vax it's almost like hypnosis. Study history and a blast from the sun, kracatowa or Pompeii type event will stuff us. USA has a plant that burns so hot they burn land fill rubbish with low emissions. It's called triple burning. Most around me want rid of our politicians and get some in that have some balls. The majority have made it a fair way up the chain in a particular society and are now just puppets. And none ever seem to be held accountable. If you look at how china goes into over production of anything once the share market sways, which I feel is due to these societies. (China has enough elec bikes to give every Aussie 2. cars are sat there with rego and later recycled and cause of fung sway they only like new steel we get recycled) look at s.a uranium mine and what happens. Why not thorium rather than uranium? The scientists for lithium that gov employ give a go ahead and most others feel we are headed for a polluted wasteland. Ocean mining, really. Don't forget what happened when we went down the road of cfc's and lead in fuel both wonderful inventions but toxic as. Does an ev that catches fire (in a bushfire prone country) emit less emissions then a regular sedan? rember the docco "who killed the electric car" ? These things have been around since the 19th century. The staidly steamer was another great invention and a well made and maintained boiler is nearly 99% efficient. What is all the ruckus mining the ocean going to do to marine life. Look at what sonar does to a scuba diver in the water. Look at who did most for the economy in the 60'sand 70's and how quickly it has swung to big business now. Are they having a say in our politics.
Rant over. Read my name before you call me out for punctuation spelling or paragraphs.
Oh last one. Just rember who, how and why cigarettes came about.
So, where would we put the nuclear waste?..
The issue would be who would be selected to build it and who is in control of its billings when completed ???
Bull shit
Guys even if they got unlimited amounts of energy, and could get it to you for free. Your bill would still be however much the politicans and their billionaire mates think they can squeeze from you. And you still would have been taxed to pay for most of the infrastructure.
Difficult politically? Oh right… kissing the WOKE globalists' ass
Majority of Australians support LGBTIQ+ lifestyles, despite it meaning that future populations will not be able to financially support the aged pension.
Does it mean that everyone should adopt it because of a 'majority consensus', or should the 'majority' undergo re-education?
Dutton should hold a referendum about nuclear energy on the next Federal Election Day and save money
What could be more cost effective than just swapping the coal fired boiler with a nuclear powered on … all the infrastructure is there and it would be quite quick too
Of course they do, they are intelligent people that realize how toxic are the green energies to produce. Not so green afterwards and viable to provide the amount of energy needed.
Build it in north WA but cyclone proof and develop the interior of the country
What about electric run turbine generator units got a kids prototype design in the works if your in to YouTube super state neyodium only on grants science show vs standard braking x4 at maximum permutation braking education hay class???? Or the ability design to tanks fisheries check final on weight deckng and desalination Neptune and yes net lady including that green stuff on the top from a creepy crawlers to snails and fish your class never did aquarium supplies stuff education by the looks prawns or your criminal method in production.
Mr. Ted – If you propose to use Small Modular Reactors (SMR) you’re in a spot of bother. The most promising design being developed by Nu-Scale in the USA has been abandoned because of soaring costs. The US taxpayers and the utilities have both walked away. In addition, there were complex issues in the disposal of waste products produced by this design of reactor. If a Nuclear Reactor were to be built in Australia – it would need to be located close the coast for cooling water on the Eastern Seaboard. Most Eastern Seaboard towns are strong LNP electorates – which LNP electorate would be putting their hand up for a Nuclear Reactor in their leafy seaside suburb?
Mr. Ted – I have not seen any textbooks written on how to recommission Chernobyl or Fukushima Nuclear Power Stations after a catastrophic accident. The repair and maintenance work is never performed by the fast talking well paid white shirt executives or journalists who reside in the plush office blocks. The dangerous repair and maintenance work is performed by the much-maligned hard working under appreciated blue collar workforce. Never forget the nuclear power catastrophic accidents of Chernobyl or Fukushima – thousands of blue-collar workers had to risk their lives to contain the accidents at these sites. Have either Chernobyl or Fukushima been returned to the revenue paying generation of electricity after these catastrophic accidents?
Mr. Ted – The time from planning to operation for a large-scale Nuclear Power station in the west is on average 17 to 19 years. According to those in the know at Stanford University the generation cost for Nuclear is $152 to 189 MWh + the cost of storing treating spent fuel rods for 200,000 years.
Mr. Ted – are you proposing that we wait between 17 to 19 years for your dream power station? Will you still be in office in 17 to 19 years time!
Mr. Ted – which corporation has put their hand up to build this Power Station – or do the taxpayers have to stump up the coin to pay for your dream power station?
Yeah I agree with nuclear energy.. side benefit with nuclear fission energy is we can enrich it for weapon grade plutonium and for our submarines fleet..
And nuclear doesn’t consume large tracts of farmland small footprint
Look at this snivelling flea!!…..No wonder the Libs never stand up to Labor……He's like a whimpering scared little girl!!
Just get on with it!
Cleaner and greener. Good idea
I don't believe Aussies have been herded and hood winked into falling for the nuclear narrative. It's failed for years
get up as an energy source. The governments have wanted nuclear for decades and now their little plan of pulling the plug on us all, has worked. Nuclear opens up security and safety concerns far worse than anything else and Aussies have continually voted it down, until now it seems. Brainwashed again. So where are the waste dumps going to go ? Canberra ? or in our backyards ? It's just another weapon in their arsonel to wipe us all out at the push of a button. Make no mistake and don't fall for it. Wake up for heaven's sake !!!
Net zero is rubbish. Co2 emissions are not harmful. Even the ipcc has been unable to link co2 to any global warming which in itself is not happening. In short this whole thing is BS. Get us nuclear, keep coal and gas, get out of our lives and close the borders.
Australia must start building Nuclear power station now. Australia’s industry is growing fast and will come to a stop if goal fired stations are closed too soon, trying to achieve net zero carbon emissions will never happen, also just think about it a moment and you will see why EV,s will fail, 75% of the EV are built by one of the biggest polluters (China) , the carbon footprint before the EV even goes one kilometre is 3-16 Ton of carbon, a average diesel Ute would have to drive 80-100 thousand kilometres to reach that level and that’s before the EV is driven out the door. The EV batteries are made of rare earth material which is also scarce and even more carbon is given off digging it up, there is not enough electric stations, it takes forever to fill and is more expensive unless you fill it up at home it goes on and on, I think we are being fed a bunch of horses crap about solar and wind farms being the answer. Rant over.
majority ? how can this be correct more correctly a sample
This is only because most people have been dilibritly scared about the lies of Climate Change !!
Bring on the power of the atom I say. At least it works all the time unlike "Renewables" which don't and have to be "renewed" more frequently. It also doesn't rely on taxpayer subsidies unlike said "renewables". Time for these Luddites to get with the program. They don't want us to be successful. They all want us living knee deep in mud wearing reed skirts in order to solve the climate "crisis".
I would support Australia implementing modern design nuclear power stations and supporting infrastructure, not necessarily SMEs. A Referendum would probably provide the best option for an Australia wide vote, and just maybe Australia might actually vote YES.
The benefits of nuclear are there. They are affordable, reliable, smaller land footprint then renewables and they are emissions free.
people have such a short term memory over the coalitions stance on nuclear, which they weren't game to try while they held power… then they had to do something drastic when they lost, so they dug up their nuclear policy and completely revamped their stance and gave it a go… why now, desperation… I'm for nuclear power, but the move is desperate, would've been nice if they started this a decade ago, when they were in power…
How come the Coalition didn,t start this process in the last nine years of wasted coalition government., because it,s too expensive and will take decades.
What's the logic if any for SMR's.
Is it because they are smaller they must be safer.
Was it too much of a strain working out we'd need lots of them instead of a few large reactors.
A quick google should dispel all fears over nuclear because it's the safest energy source there is.
I’m all for nuclear, it’s a great source of stable carbon free power that can be easily regulated. Also with modern techniques and placing the reactors at ideal regions not prune to natural disasters. It would be very successful. A great example of this is France. A majority of their power is all Nuclear and the rest is renewables!
How can these fools get away with deliberately destroying our lives is simply diabolical! Surely our politicians are not in charge of this country?!
First we need labor and the greens gone.
What happens to bowen's toxic materials when the coalition wins the next election
If coal, gas, and nuclear power are professional athletes, renewable energy is a junior athlete. Coal power generation is easy to manage and operate even in developing countries, and gas power generation can suppress pollution such as photochemical smog. In addition, nuclear power plants support pumped-storage power generation because they maintain a constant amount of output at all times during operation. In addition, it is indispensable for a networked society that requires power 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Renewable energy should be limited to self-sufficiency and is defective as industrial power.
i hope i can vote for green
we need care about nuclear energy
DUTTON FOR PRESIDENT!
Nuclear energy can keep up with the popular getting bigger while renewable energy can not do that
