Defence Minister Richard Marles says the government’s $54 billion for the Navy is the “most significant reason” Australians should be confident in the nation’s defence.
Mr Marles joined Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell to discuss the government’s latest plan for the Australian Navy.
“What we saw under the former government was announcement after announcement which was a vision of the future but the money just wasn’t there,” he said.
“We heard them announce a $35 billion guided weapons enterprise and they attached $1 billion to it.
“This is $54 billion worth of expenditure over the next decade and $54 billion is now in the budget for that.”

Money laundering at taxpayer expense,Marles and all his corrupt Corporate mates.
For $1.6m per year. Gen Campbell got his money worth, but definitely not the Australian people!
What’s that going to do biological warfare china already trialled it with covid
How about more public housing and more incentives for younger people for home ownership or is defence more important?
That's great!!
They'll be real handy in 5 to 10 years time.
Marles: I'll bring the coke. Albanese: ok I'll being the hula hoops.
Nope not confident. Firstly theyve allowed military men to wear skirts …not a confidence booster, secondly ..wheres our Navy stopping the illegal boats? They should be out there protecting our country and the people , fire a warning shot over the bow and turn em around . Until they do that, im not confident in the Navy. Nothing these politians say pans out , its all dribble. Australias a sitting duck because of the clowns that have been running the show for decades, LIBS and LAB
A labor government promising to spend more on defence .. in the future.
Most important thing to get right is the pronoun training.
😂😂😂
Marles has no idea, never dealt with a problem in his life..never worn a uniform, ffs get rid of him..😮
Real easy – pub test – for males- the lying member of labor party crime syndicate family. Just put the cheque on the table mate – and cash it – right here – right now – TODAY. Either put up – or shut up.
😂😂 you can buy all the new ships you want. But you still need the crews for them, which might be a bit hard considering the one's we have now are currently 6% understaffed. All thanks to your policies
never trust marles, he can't even speak clearly, no money has been added to defence, nothing spent, this isn't real. all smoke and mirrors
By the time we get any new ships or subs, it will be too late and the left-leaning public service organisation CASG will have successfully destroyed the nation's capability with their indecisiveness and meddling with designs. Another program was made late, over cost and unsuitable. Well done you slackers, once again our fighting forces will get lasts years model late and at a stupid cost.
The announcement of the new service fleet is terrific & about 10 year's overdue the Australian Defence Budget has not just been overlooked by the current government but bye a number of previous governments as well ..
The problem now is that with the amount time it takes before the newly announced service fleet goes into service .
Anyone with half a brain that in the 7-10 Years it will take to build the new fleet Australia will need a fleet double the size .
Remember we are lagging behind in defence capability & we are playing catch up ..
Australia needs to look at some possible quick options we might have to patch the gapping whole in the Australian defence capability now
&
Shouldn't Australia be asking our allies if they can possibly offer Australia to buy something to get Australia up to speed on defence .
It's an embarrassing situation to have to ask our friends & allies because we dropped the ball on defence budget
Australia borrowed a large sum to keep Australia running during the pandemic.
From that money the gave people that we're already receiving a government benefit double the fortnightly payments & nothing had changed at all in their life .
Australia should borrow what it need to fix this gapping hole in Australia's defence & as it's the blame of all government party's.
To cover the cost of borrowing cuts to politicians perks & bonous can cover the dept .
The Aussie tax payers have given enough to cover government mistakes .
Failed referendums
Over payment to already unemployment during COVID
Government advertising
Green energy projects destination to fail
Internet line failure
Purchase of land in the Dungog region for new dam that never happened
+ Many other failed government projects
All money down the drain it's time the politicians took a hit
The US 6 drone ships are still in early prototype stage with production for the US not expected until mid 2030s i don't see the US selling them to us right away. The 11 frigates are heavy corvettes at best going by the already available information they haven't even picked a ship or even started the tender process for them yet and going by the cut backs already in ships only 6-9 at most will be built. The only thing we know for sure so far is the Hunter class frigates being cut back from 9 to 6 and the Offshore Patrol Vessels being cut back from 12 to 6 and 2 of the existing Anzac class frigates being decommissioned and sold off asap leaving us with 9 ships 6 frigates and 3 destroyers for the foreseeable future it's all smoke and mirrors.
always blaming the prvious government bla bla bla. your inthe jiob noe, just own up and get it done!
Really, well the US will be pleased, as Australia is just another base to add the their 900 already illegally. Bases worldwide.
More Labor lies.. Never going to happen just like the $275 off the power bills. They are a joke.
Equating dollar expenditure with confidence in defence is the most ridiculous assumption since The Maginot line.
More homosexual morning teas are needed to boost the ADF's effectiveness.
Surface ships are not going to save Australia from China, New Submarines, a good ABM SAM System, and investing in a powerful Air Force of F-35 and F-15EX will keep China and all others from Attacking.
We may as well say we are 'planning' 100 new Frigets. It is in a decade and Labor may not be in Government. If Labor aren't in Government the budget isn't theirs. It becomes ammunition to use against the incumbent Government, if they don't deliver. Someone else's problem sometime in the future. If they were serious they order a 4th AWD now and reduce the General Purpose Friget acquisition to 9 (instead of 11). $1.7 billion in forward estimates is pocket change. Where is the money from the failed Barracuda Submarines? Savings from Anzac Friget being decommissioned early. Savings from tanks and IFV we aren't procuring? Savings from personnel shortages? Many programs have been cancelled and nothing now? All this does is reduce the Hunter program by 3, reduce the OPVs by 6 and saves money for Labor mismanagement. Smoke, mirrors and political strategy.
