Embers from Vic bushfires ‘hurled’ for up to ten kilometres: Ballarat mayor

Ballarat Mayor Des Hudson says wind has caused embers to be hurled up to ten kilometres due to bushfires in western Victoria.

Residents in Victoria’s west are being told to evacuate immediately as out-of-control bushfires threaten several communities.

“The smell is very heavy with smoke at the moment, so hopefully those crews that are on the ground and in the area are able to be fighting back the front and able to get these under control as soon as possible,” Mr Hudson said.

The mayor said rain was expected later in the evening with hopes a downpour would “dampen some of the ground”.

“There’s significant fuel for the fire to be burning in,” he said.

“With the really strong winds, it was absolutely taking off with the plumes of smoke that have been coming over Ballarat and Beaufort.”

  1. Ballarat is quite a distance away from Beaufort. It’s not even the same local government area most of the towns . It’s closer to Ararat so not sure why the Mayor of Pyrenees Shire isn’t being interviewed. Clear case of the media not actually knowing the areas they report on

  2. Congratulations Aussies! You have now managed to surpass USA as the large nation with highest green house gas emissions per Capita in the world! Please do not call us anymore when you have extreme draughts, floods, fires etc. YOU are causing same here.

Australia have optimal conditions for solarpanels. Australia have optimal conditions for huge bulk energy production with offshore windmill parks and thus also for green hydrogen production. And yet your government recently approved around 30 new fracking sites. Fracking and tarsand extraction are the two most greenhouse gas emitting and resource demanding processes. Fracking means producing the strongest acid you can make. Transporting to a site, Pumbing it down to the underground, below the groundwater, to dissolve slate stone that contain microscopic bubbles of gas that often have a high content of one of the worst greenhouse gasses, methane. As the slate stone dissolves it creates underground cavities that means the soil above have to readjust thus creates earthquakes. As the earthquakes occur if creates the very real chance that the acid and the groundwater gets connected through cracks and thus this insane technique also pose the risk of making large areas deserted due to contaminated groundwater. Look at YT and see Americans that suddenly experience that they can ignite the water coning out of their taps. Ask yourself if that are water that can sustain life!

    CHANGE! NOW, PLEASE!

    WE are OUT OF TIME!

Humanity are on the line! We already have entered the largest species extinction period since the asteroid hit Yucatan 66 million years ago.
