  1. I drove through Joplin about 6 months later and ill NEVER forget what i saw. The path of the tornado didn't have a damn thing over 10ft tall left standing. It was utter destruction…..

  2. I'm flabbergasted that so many didn't take it seriously. Willing to record in an attempt to get likes, gambling on the ability to get to safety in time. And did homegirl with the chaser group respond to dude's concern for the city with "Nobody cares"?! It sounded like it. I'll be happy if I pass from this life, having never seen a tornado. They're just terrifying.

  3. Ive noticed in a few of the videos that there is a weird moment were everything in the shot sorta jumps up. The trampoline video and the middle school video – sure there is wind and rain then bam all the stuff flopping around kinda jumps up. Its erie.

  4. I live in Utah and on average, despite heavy yearly flooding and rare earthquakes, most houses have basements. It's mind blowing that any houses anywhere are built without them, especially those in tornado-prone areas.

  6. I grew up in that part of the state & had family that worked in Joplin. Fortunately, none of them were working that day, but everyone knew a few people severely injured or killed. Growing up, I often had different high school sports & competitions in Joplin in the mid 1990's. I went there about a year after the tornado & couldn't believe how different everything looked. The area around the high school was unrecognizable. Neighborhoods that were always shaded by huge trees that were probably at least 50 years old were just barren lots. A few trunks were still standing, but they had no bark & looked like they were sanded smooth. I didn't recognize anything & thought I was lost. However, I saw the high school & realized I knew exactly where I was. Nothing looked anywhere close to how I remembered. It was insane. Almost like an atomic bomb was dropped that removed structures, trees, & even killed most of the yards. It looked like a developer had just broken ground on new subdivisions despite the land formerly having houses from mid 20th Century. Hope to never see that level of destruction during my lifetime ever again. Have to say, however, the people of Joplin are some tough SOB's. Regular people showed up to help protect affected areas from looters right after the storm & people stepped up to help each other. It was amazing to see something that positive come out of so much destruction. The people in that part of America are generally some of the nicest you can ever meet.

  7. Hi there. I live in Countryside Illinois and last year we had a F1 go through the southern part of the city and the Hodgkin's Minards. The next day we drove over to the area and roofs were stripped of their shingles and trees were uprooted. The area smelled of freshly cut wood. The Menards lost a retaining wall in the back of the lumber yard. You can never tell what a tornado is going to do so always be prepared for the worst. Another one was an F5 that hit Plainfield, Illinois in 1990. It developed in less than fifteen minutes and it ripped through the town in about a half hour. The coach of the football team in the high school got his team off the practice field and into an equipment shed before it hit. The shed was the only thing left standing…everyone survived. As I remember 29 people were killed in that storm. The last big storm was an F4 that hit Hometown and the Oak Lawn area Illinois in 1967. It caused damage to schools and leveled the general community. 33 died in this storm. You never know what will go down. The best thing you can do is keep your eye on the weather and take cover with the best you got. Since it is coming up on that season be aware. Stay safe out there. Take care and God bless (edited for content)

  8. I was driving through there and had just left Motel 8 after my trip to California from Indiana and back. I remember looking at a pengin statue with phone buttons on it. I stopped at the Kumandgo whatever for ice and could see storm coming. I had just left an hour before this happened. Had I got hit in this storm nobody would have known who or where I was for a few days. I remember watching the lightning behind me on my way back home…..😢

  9. I’m a retired 911 dispatcher in NW Illinois. For 24 years I would have been the one who would have set off the sirens. If we received notice that a tornado was spotted within 25 miles of any of our jurisdictions, they were set off.

I can’t imagine how scary this must have been to those affected. I can’t believe how powerful, and devastating this storm ended up being declared. Thank you for sharing this video as I have learned quite a bit about the potential impact of tornadoes.

  10. I spoke to Doug Hopper not long after the tornado (I worked for a newspaper and I was doing a story about tornados). He was in a Jeep (Cherokee, I believe it was). He was parked by St. John's and was probably the luckiest person of all. All the windows burst in his vehicle and he had cuts, but was okay. He said he saw telephone/power poles shoot straight up in the air and saw things he couldn't even describe happening around him.
