Shadow Climate Change and Energy Minister Ted O’Brien says the Albanese government needs to give Australians “other choices” than to buy electric vehicles.
Under Chris Bowen’s new fuel efficiency standards, vehicle manufacturers will have to produce more fuel-efficient cars for consumers.
It is expected the policy will increase the prices of some of the country’s most loved cars, including the Toyota Land Cruiser and Ford Ranger.
“This is again a case of Labor just being big government,” Mr O’Brien told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“They’re saying, ‘we will decide what cars you must drive’ just as they are saying, ‘we will decide what form of energy you must use’.”

Im so over gruberment and council dictating how we live. We are being pushed to our absolute limits. Australia must stand up to this.
Having a carbon tax has been a dream of Labor/greens for a long time now. They openly said that they would give the tax another name to disguise its true purpose.
Its all instructions from the WEF not any particular political party , why do you think its happening in every country
It's not about the environment it's all about control.
Hydrogen powered vehicles will be better than EV and won't be so controllable.
You can't store electricity the same way you can store fuel. It's all about control.
Now let's talk about resale value……
Point A to point B, that is all the thing has to do in the most reasonably cost effective way, many millionaires take the same attitude. But having said that the development of the EV is a way of weaning some of my existence off Middle East oil is another consideration.
Is Bowen working for the CCP by promoting all the Chinese EV'S . Which are junk .
Next they will say if your car is over 10 years you can't drive it any more .
Don't politicians interact with people in the real world – do they ever look at data and ask provoking questions are they all vapidly stupid. More so given China was permitting 2 coal fired powers stations per week in 2022. Why is any of this relevant given the Australian base at Mawson in Antartica has temperature measurements going back to 1954. If you examine the mean minimum (yearly) temperature data, the average for the period 1960 to 2023 inclusive is -14.3 degrees celsius, the median is -14.2 and the standard deviation is 0.8. The data is normally distributed (not skewed) and a best fit line yields an equation for predicted temperature, where predicted t = 0.000858516 x year + (-15.9738). If you use this equation for the year 2200 you get a predicted temperature of -14.08 and for 2100 -14.17. This data demonstrates there is no significant warming trend reflected in the Mawson mean minimum temperature dataset.
To add insult to industry, if you take the mean minimum temperature from Giles weather station located in Central Australia (WA side of border) from 1957 to 2022 inclusive, the average minimum (yearly) temperature is 16.1 degrees celsius, the median temperature is 16.2 and the standard deviation is 0.7. Again the data has a normal distribution and there is no warming trend and in fact using a linear best fit there is a slight cooling trend. where calculated temp equals 25.8106 + (-0.00485962) x year.
I'll decide what I want to drive and when I want to drive it, not some ALP/LNP fool in Canberra.
Labor can go *%$# themselves.
This will be there downfall as nobody will accept this if they do then expect to live like the Chinese real soon.
Let's hope that when we need an ambulance or a fire truck they are fully charged and ready to go… unfortunately, when storms and fires hit, the power is often out…. and during floods, EVs are grounded….
More lies and scare mongering by credlen and sky evil news.
1:46 The government can call it what they like but this is market manipulation.
Credlin talking BS again , what a surprise,, and a comments section full of bot comments with a few brain-dead fans that got their mum to type for them,, truly pathetic, but the Americans think its real,LOL…
Labor bs
Try towing a caravan or boat with a TESLA or MG battery car! There goes those industries also!
This has nothing to do with ev. Every major country adhere to these rules. Australia has been dumping ground for for these vehicles for years. All they have to do is increase the efficiency by changing the drive line to something else other then the current ones. Not necessarily electric.
Yep of coarse we are the dumping ground of low grade fuel as well as cars. Do you think we deserve better. I don't think we are a third world country yet.
Get rid of the bogan mobiles.
Australian passenger vehicles are emitting 50% more carbon dioxide (CO₂) than the average of the world’s major markets.
I will decide what cliff Bowen will be thrown off !!!
These muppets need to remember who pays their grossly inflated salaries
Glad the ute tax is now gone here in N.Z
Good bye Labor,
Thankyou kim jung sleezy & your wife kim jung bowen.
The future is disappointing.
This is what on sensible, feet on the ground senator explains: "Liberty. Freedom. Dignity. In February, Labor released a report titled ‘Cleaner, Cheaper to Run Cars: The Australian New Vehicle Efficiency Standard’.
However, this title is a misleading piece of rhetoric. The reason Labor claims they will make cars cheaper to run is because they intend to make cars that consume larger amounts of fuel (such as large utes and bigger family-oriented cars) too expensive to buy.
The report states that, “Transport is Australia’s third largest source of greenhouse gas emissions and will soon become the largest source if nothing is done… Overall, cars make up about 60% of transport emissions.”
Australia emits 1.16% of the world’s CO2 emissions. China emits 29.18%, and the United States emits 14.02%. Labor is telling us that Australian transport is responsible for 60% of 1.16% of global carbon emissions, which amounts to 0.69% of global carbon emissions.
This hardly seems like a global emergency.
The report goes on to say that, “Because it is voluntary, and [due to] the absence of monetary consequence if the standards are not met, the voluntary standard has not provided sufficient incentive to introduce more effective fuel efficiency technology to cars supplied to the Australian market.”
So Labor intends to create a “monetary consequence” for vehicle manufacturers to meet the government’s carbon emissions standards. As the report explains, “A NVES [New Vehicle Efficiency Standard] works by imposing a limit on CO2 (measured in grams per kilometre or CO2 g/km) each year across the fleet of vehicles that a supplier brings into the country. Each year the limit is reduced, so the standard becomes more stringent.”
Simply put, manufacturers will face a carbon tax, which will be passed on to the buyer. As Peter Dutton put it, “Under Anthony Albanese’s ute tax and family car tax, families will pay thousands of dollars more for their new HiLux or their new Ranger.”
This, of course, means you will be redirected via incentives to purchase a less reliable electric vehicle. If one wishes to drive an electric car, that’s fine, but the government taxing new petrol cars and incentivising EVs is a bit too controlling for my taste.
Once again, Labor have shown how out-of-touch they are with mainstream Australians, who are already experiencing increasing cost-of-living pressures, by planning to introduce a new vehicle tax in pursuit of achieving Net Zero by 2050 and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 43% by 2030.
The ute is a beloved staple of Aussie life, so of course Labor have decided it must be taxed. It appears they intend to phase out the ute and big family cars over time. This is yet more of the government telling Australians how they may or may not spend their money, and all in pursuit of the incoherent climate agenda."
MEANWHILE China Pumps out 30 COAL Power Stations a MONTH. We get WEAKER and THEY get Stronger. Can people NOT See whats Happening. And We Get PUNISHED.
