The Australian navy is set to acquire a new fleet of warships.
Eight vessels will be at the centrepiece of a major restructuring of the navy.
The long-waited navy surface fleet review will be released on Tuesday.
This comes as the government counters criticism of being slow to respond to the threat posed by China.
As part of the restructure, Adelaide’s 45-billion-dollar Hunter-class frigate program will be maintained but reduced from nine ships to six.

Whos going to man them? Nobody is joining the Navy in Australia, we could barely send anything to the red sea. The same people on both sides of politics have degraded our military to the point of ineptitude.
Put a nuclear engine in the Collins Class subs like they were originally built to have, stop pissfarting around and do something.
The deliberate erosion of our military is borderline treasonous.
Labor will announce billions in defence spending, but in a timeframe that keeps kicking the can down to when “they” aren’t in government anymore.
So basically we Americans just need to budget and plan for Australia's defence?

Try a fleet of 25 – 50 ship build – and you might be getting somewhere. The Swedish stealth corvette – and frigates – would be the right mix. Given the corvettes – are littoral waters ship – and the Swedes – have perfected the design – that has been in service for years now. And is about to get an updated design.
Even if you went 25 corvettes and 25 frigates – that would give Australia – a reasonable size fleet – given this would be a 10 – 15 year build program. And that gives you the rotation of – ships coming off the assembly line – with a third in service – with a third in deep maintenance.
Given you will only have a third of that number seaworthy – means – of eight you don't even get three seaworthy at anyone time.
Labor really has to think long term. For the specialised work force building the ships. And also to get the numbers of ships you need to defend Australia.
We should be getting aircraft carriers and building up our air force instead of relying on the Americans and the British to bail us out. Spend more money on defence capability.

I don't know how RAN is going to protect Australia with double the fleet of just ASW ships. I wonder if there are any AWDs in the new list.
I hope the cutback to 6 Hunter class will all be all AWDs of 96.cell.VLS and the smaller vessels. Whatever they choose will be ASW. It will be weird to have 6 hunter class of ASW and 12 or so corvettes if this what they have planned. It will mean we can hunt submarines Whoopi do. It's too bad if we face off with destroyers. No aircraft carrier, no long stike bombers, no decent destroyers. Yeah, good luck
As Ukraine shows the world ships are obsolete we plan to spend money on more.Australia has always been a joke, panicked in WW2 by Japanese invasion no lesson learnt.
Any decent power could take Australia easily and face an unarmed submissive population with no missile defence. Joke
