The islands seem to me like how the Russians view their tank forces: they see the number they have and let it fool them into thinking it’s a pure advantage, but they don’t realize the liability they’ve made for themselves.
China’s island airbases might seem at first like unsinkable aircraft carriers and missile deployment spaces, but they are also major targets that can’t be moved or hidden. They are very expensive to maintain and will be almost impossible to resupply in the event of an actual conflict. In short, I think they’re a stupidly expensive bluff that would backfire in a hypothetical war with China losing millions of yuan worth of equipment for no real advantage (just like Russia sending hundred of tanks just to have them run out of fuel and become useless)
