NATO is a Military Alliance of 31 countries which includes 29 countries in Europe plus USA and Canada. NATO does not have any troops or income itself but rather requires each country to make annual cash payments and to also contribute personnel and equipment in the event of conflict. In a recent speech DONALD TRUMP stated that when he was President multiple NATO countries had not paid their contributions and he had threatened them with the withdrawal of NATO support unless they paid up. In this video I look at the current funding position for NATO, analyse the amount that each country is contributing and discuss the implications of non-payment for NATO members.

  1. I've been watching for a couple months now and your commentary usually felt wel researched and genuine. Those where topics I didn't know much about going into the video's. I'm now starting to question how trustworthy that commentary is. This was really bad. All NATO members have been paying their opperating costs, there's been no lapses in payment and the 2% of gdp guideline is a suggestion from the time where the soviet union was the big empire next door. There's no 2% gdp requirement to be a NATO member. Trump is an idiot and taking anything he says as valid is a big flop.

  2. 0:32 The "2%" is not an "obligation", it's a guideline. And Trump is a BUSINESSMAN, not a leader. You don't run a country like a retail shop or whatever tf he did before that. He was severely unfit to be in politics then, and now. He will leave America's allies hanging if China goes after Taiwan, because he's all like "China, China, China". Seriously, there are compilations of him saying it. He's heavily invested in China. A vote for Trump is a vote for Putler and Shitler (Xi + Hitler = Shitler).

  3. Ironically, the biggest motivation for Greece's relatively high level of spending is NOT the requirements of NATO or Russian deterrence. It's an effort to protect against a fellow NATO member……….Turkey.

  4. Trump is a hypocrite telling other people to "pay" when according to a Forbes report in 2020 he has over $1 billion in debt, to finance his assets. He even buried his ex-wife on a GOLF course to avoid paying taxes.
And Moldova and Georgia are NOT in NATO, so they don't "pay", but they deserve to be attacked anyway? 😠

  5. I would say that all donations to Ukraine military should be considered defence expenditure.
Also, in the running costs contributions, remember the relative populations and wealth distribution when you consider whether the USA is really hard done by.

  6. Trump may be playing mind games using his typical wild rhetoric, where the subconscious message becomes, in effect: Regardless of your nation's NATO payment status, you must prepare for a Russian invasion that can occur anytime and at any place that is not actively preparing for such a scenario, and that NATO's collective defense may not, for whatever reason, be put into 100 percent effect.

In other words, Trump might be anticipating Russia to pick-off one of the smaller NATO nations and, because of the high expense and a wish to avoid nuclear confrontation, NATO members may not do much more than provide military weaponry and a few troops.

Ukraine's big mistake was not realizing years ago that Russia had every intention of invading.

  7. Watching this a second time – There could be another reason why NATO members slipped (by a small fraction of a percent for most of them) is the memory of WWI where intense military expenditures on the part of the super powers actually fed the war fever.
Military expenditures can either be seen as keeping a country fit and ready but can also scare the other country, namely Russia – because what other country was NATO built to defend against? NATO was in the ME for the past two decades but there isn't much mention of it there now, at least in my laptop version of the daily delusion.
Europeans seem to have much longer cultural memories especially about the WW years. They were the scene of most of the death and destruction. The USA suffered no domestic physical destruction or the enormous death tolls in either war. WE also forget that it took decades for most of them to repair the damage let alone get above it and grow again.
BTW – I spent a year in 1972/73 at a school in London. The east end still had missing buildings in some rows of housing that had been damaged by the blitz.. The city was much lower than today with only one smallish high rise – a tiny footprint and about 25 stories at the intersection of Tottenham Court Rd and Oxford St (can't quite recall). It hadn't been occupied yet and was drowned in litigation. We fed gas meters to heat the apartment with 10p coins (about 25cents at the time) and almost every building was still black or gray with coal soot. Thatcher a few years later changed the economic environment and encouraged investment banking. The city is almost unrecognizable now but a lot cleaner.
You should also have compared NATO dues with the population of those countries. Many are really very small. And GDP isn't such a great measure of prosperity. If the population tends to be sedentary – doesn't live on a lot of personal debt, home mortgages, car loans and credit card debt, or companies financed with enormous loans, etc – they will automatically have a smaller GDP than a country like the USA that encourages those debts. GDP does not measure that frozen wealth and it says nothing about what is purchased with the domestic product. Enormous leverage is also a liability all by itself.
    Evergrande proves that!
BTW – Who's better off – A country where a million clay bricks cost about $20,000 (China) or in the USA/ EURO sphere where one clay brick costs about $4.00 each? I haven't checked this but in Hong Kong and Japan tiny sleep cubicles the size of large coffins can cost what a full size hotel room can costs here per night depending on where it is.

  8. Thank you Joe, for not taking Trump’s statement out of context. Most other channels only show a portion of what Trump said, and completely distorted his intended message. It says a lot about truth and the media.

  9. This reminds me of the U.S. back in the day when you used to have to subscribe to the local fire dept. If you didn't pay your fire dept. dues and had a fire, the fire dept. would not come.

  10. In the US we’ve been discussing this question for years. Our frustration with someNATO partners goes back decades, but is was his text and tone that is unbecoming of a world leader but par for the course in the case of that obviating, self-promoting fraud. Tone, not substance. The tone benefited Putin. That is not the way to lead an alliance during war.

  11. I am wondering what it means to "pay your country's dues" to NATO. Is this money actually paid to NATO as an organization or is this money that the country invests in its owned armed services that will be available to participate in any NATO actions or is it some combination of these or something else?

  12. While the majority of NATO countries "2 %" stays in NATO The US percentage is spent maintaining, staffing and arming ships, ports, bases, planes and all the transport and support necessary for a worldwide presence. Subtract all of those and what percentage actually is used in Nato. If NATO did not exist, we would still have ships, bases, planes, personnel and all the support structure and no one would pay anything for those in fact they would make us pay to lease the bases. What would we do with all of the troops and equipment would we remove the tanks planes etc. and would Trump retire the thousands of troops and pay to have them repatriated or just abandon them? Trump and the Republican Party have obviously taken all of this into account since they have the answers just look at what the House has done as a Texas Congress man said I just need one thing to tell the voters that we have done.

The majority of the money for Ukraine is spent in the US providing good jobs for American workers and Manufacturers. I have heard numbers of from 70% to 95% of that money stays in the US.

  13. Could you do a video explaining or summarising why people say that the Russian economy is doing well? The only reason I can think of is the financial control's they've put in place.

  14. Thank you so much for the education! Even otherwise excellent podcasters need to watch your podcast, since there is a lot of ignorance about this topic. One Denys Davydov, for example, an excellent podcaster, said NATO members are not required to pay any dues. That is flat wrong, and you explain that very well. I suggested he watch this excellent video… (probably he wont though, sadly)

Thanks for all your hard work, producing your informative, and entertaining podcasts… love those clips at the end too…

  15. Interesting topic. Regarding NATO weapons costs: the relationship of American arms manufacturing, the government and politicians probably puts them and their their economy at an advantage. However, European NATO members have depended on American and Canadian allies excessively in two "world wars" and up to Putin's war. Many European NATO members such as Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands were warned decades ago about buying Putin's oil and they promised to only get 10% Russia, that went up to 50%. Why should NATO members who didn't depend on Russian oil defend those who helped Putin build build his military? Why should NATO members who helped Europe defeat fascism in world war two defend NATO members which elect fascist politicians who spread hate and racism?
