On the subject of rare garters, there is a strip of beautiful habitat (fenced off, no public entry, protected by the airport) right next to San Francisco Airport, amid concrete and hustle and bustle. And there are San Francisco garters there. No doubt a limited population, but I am happy they are there.

What's the legality on this? obviously it must be legal in some way since you have them. I first saw the thumbnail and freaked because I thought they were the San Francisco Garter Snake which I know is illegal to own due to being an endangered species. Wanting to look into getting the California Red-Sided Garter Snake as the next best thing but can't find anything from any of the breeders I know. Don't live in California but used to kidnap wild snakes in Idaho as a kid and keep them as pets. Is it similar?
