Aboard, Enever Limerick and his comrades found themselves at the very edge of the landing beach, their main battery guns positioned perilously close to the shore. With hearts pounding and adrenaline coursing through their veins, they unleashed a relentless barrage of fire, their sole mission to clear the landing area.
The 14-inch guns, roaring like thunder, tore through the coral and sandy beaches, leaving in their wake an unimaginable scene of destruction. It felt as if nothing could withstand such a relentless onslaught.
But then, as the deafening cacophony of their guns relented, they turned their gaze toward the advancing landing craft. Emerging from the hillsides, like ghosts, were Japanese tanks, undisturbed by the Americans’ most potent weapons. The fight was far from over…

Stories like this make the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.
Left out is during the advance of forces after D-Day, the Texas, in order to support forces inland that were at the very limit of her range. As they got beyond that point she got as close to shore as she dared then flooded seaward compartments to impart a list. Gun elevation gained precious degrees for a few more miles of reach.
Not to mention the "cheating" duels against enemy snipers during the landings.

In Clarkson's doco about PQ17, when the convoy came under air attack she immediately set off at flank speed by herself and executed a "28 knot handbrake turn" 😄
This was to bring all her guns to bear on the enemy, unleashing such an astonishing hail of fire that most of the enemy either fled in a panic or dropped their torpedoes so early they'd no chance of hitting the Wainwright let alone the convoy.
Her reward was to be one of the ships in Bikini Atoll for underwater nuke tests. Twice. She survived both times. Two years later on July 5 1948, they towed her out to sea and sunk her for target practice, striking her from the Naval Register 8 days later.
What a drag.
Kind of disappointed that Texas' most famous moment was not included. Flooding the starboard blister tanks to give the main battery 2 degrees of additional range. Not to mention that San Jacinto is o longer the home of the ship, it will be staying in Galveston where it has been in dry dock for the last 18 months.
When USS Texas was commissioned with her 14" guns the British had 10 Battleships under construction with 15" guns. So her reign did not last very long.
Actually, I believe the Texas is either still in Dry Dock, or has just left. She almost fell apart from the things I've heard. She's a tough old lady.
My favorite story of the Texas is when they flooded her torpedo blisters and ballast tanks, giving her guns a few more degrees of elevation, to hit gun emplacements outside her standard 12-mile range.
Recognized her immediately. A lucky ship. She will be out of dry-dock soon.

It should be pointed out that the USS Texas was not the most powerful ship in the water on that date. HMS Queen Elizabeth of the five-ship Queen Elizabeth class was already in the water, having been launched in 1913 and commissioned in 1914. The QE class carried eight 15-inch guns with each gun throwing a 1,900 pound projectile to a greater range.

A BIG Thumbs Up….I admit, I am all in on any story about The Battleship Texas. Growing up in Marshall TX my Scout Troop visited The Texas. Then a family move to just outside of Houston, with The Texas just on the other side of the ship channel (a short ferry ride) from home, meant several trips there. As an adult I took my Son there as well. I witnessed her in motion when she was originally moved for repairs (brought tears to my eyes).
It is a great thing that the historic Battleship Texas was saved for future generations to visit. Now she is finally being restored and repaired so that she can continue to inspire and educate for another 100 years and more. Great ship cheers from North Carolina. We have done the same for our Battleship.

This ship was engineered for ship to ship, 1800s Scooner type, close range water level fights. These turrets and 14" guns ended up being far better suited to invasion and island bombardment than the 16" guns and turret angle. 16" had a harder time at — ° pounding beaches and shots under 7 miles.

My uncle was a Marine who fought on Iwo Jima. He saw BB-35 in action. I have visited the ship a few times, and will again when she docks at pier 21 in Galveston. She is impressive to say the least.
Had the privilege to go exploring aboard USS TEXAS once. Planned for maybe an hour and spent roughly 4 hours instead. Also got to explore USS NORTH CAROLINA as well.
I wish someone would do an episode on the USS North Carolina. For a foundation for the Iowa class battleships it seems that the North Carolina class gets forgotten about.

As a native texan and grand son of my grand father whom served on her and me being a major history buff I thank you for restoring her to he Former glory.
The USS Texas BB-35 had 10 14 inch guns. Two in twin turrets in front, same aft and a single twin in the middle. The HMS Dreadnaught had 10-12 inch guns but could only fire eight in a broadside. The Texas was a better Dreadnaught.
