Toyota has once again warned 7,300 Canadians to stop driving their vehicles immediately as part of the largest auto recall ever. Andrew Chang explores the reason behind it — Takata airbag inflators that can explode — unleashing metal shrapnel that has resulted in 30 deaths worldwide and hundreds of injuries in vehicles since 2009.

This is worse than you think. i bought a Mercedes Benz in 2010 in China. it got recalled in 2013 for this reason. I sold it in 2020 and was never able to switch the airbag as they never released parts to China. They told us all extra bags went to US as penalties there were much higher. I wrote to Benz HQ in Germany and they told me they took my complaint seriously but nothing happened. we tried to get it changed but they never had the parts available… but worse than that. after the first recall, many carmakers made new cars with these faulty airbags. you could buy a new car for years and get a recall on the airbag a few minutes after leaving the car lot… so not only Takata being greedy.

My 2007 Camry is 17 years old, 283,000kms never had an Airbag go off on me. I plan to remove the OEM steering wheel, to replace it with an Aftermarket steering wheel and quick release kit.
interesting that Toyota can't figure out how to fix this problem.
My car is a 2010 Matrix, and it has a recall on it for this problem on the passenger side. The problem is not listed for this year, so it is good to check even if you don’t think it applies. It is very strange that my dealership, which has been servicing my car since before 2015 never notified me of this recall. When I called the service desk, the first person I spoke to said there was no fix in place, and said that I should get it fixed “if I notice a problem.” My reaction to that ridiculous statement got me through to a manager, who said there IS a fix and scheduled an appointment for next week. I am extremely glad that I rarely had a passenger in my car, because their lives were at risk.
It's amazing a company can make something that kills 30 ppl, injuries to who knows how many and no one's in jail. One word money.
Chrysler changed the air bags in my 2004 Ram just a 2 years ago. I knew about the recall but was never issued a DO Not Drive notice. They didn't have the parts before then.
This is why I drive Volkswagen and Volvo.

I thought Nissan was also involved in using TAKATA. Now car company Renault was in partnership with Nissan in the past. So the question remains, "Did Renault use TAKATA airbags in their cars"?
A little late to the game lol. Way to go for the recall almost 20 years late lol. Of course call a recall on the older cars lol how many really are on the road? Way to save a buck over human safety!
Liars like a typical politician! I wonder how much the car companies will get for suing the air bag manufacturer. Yup keep the lawsuit collection money and never help the citizens who buy your vehicles and keep you in business.

I have a 2006 Ford Ranger that has been recalled again for this same problem. The first time they sent a flatbed truck to pickup my Ranger. This time no flatbed.

Being a toyota which is known to last forever, they did the right thing to reissue warning…if it was a GM, they do not last over 10 years
I don't know if it's the same case as mine because I live in UE not US but I also received a letter Nissan like 2 years ago for free recall about the defective airbags. I was shocked as the car from 2005 was almost of adult age then but now I'm glad that I didn't ignore it and went to Nissan dealership for that change.

My 06 Nissan Xtrail never got the takata airbag recall the rest of the world had, and when I had an accident the driver airbag exploded in my face, it was completely ripped apart and it never prevented my face from impacting the steering wheel. I'm lucky I only came out of there with barely a bruise and a small concussion. Not only that but the passenger airbag and side curtain airbags had very delayed deployments, I was well away from my flipped car before they went off
