John Hume was a British politician who hailed from the UK city of Londonderry in Northern Ireland. A divisive character who lobbied for Northern Ireland to be annexed by the Irish Republic, John Hume is regarded as one of the key figures in the outbreak of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. Decades of violence from 1969 onwards claimed over 3,000 lives.
