I'd break out the popcorn, but I've been swimming in the stuff while following the Hugos nonsense.
Books get optioned for movies all the time without making it to the screen, so, unless things are actually being filmed, I suspect JD Barker's deal will probably just gather dust until the rights revert. (I may have too much faith in Hollywood not wanting to touch this mess.)
I hate when men say "I respect women, I have a wife/daughter/sister, etc." Because the implication is that the ONLY reason they can even fathom having respect for women is if they are related to one they personally care about. Not like we deserve respect because we're also human beings.
Following the logic of that author, I deserve a Nobel Peace Prize just because I don't lash out on people. It is also very difficult and deserves to be recognized.
Doesn't rating a book 3 stars just make 3 stars meaningless? 3 stars is the new 1 star at that rate… Makes no damn sense

I never rate below 3 stars because I will DNF a book real quick if itās not at least my understanding of āgood storytelling.ā And I donāt rate books I DNF.
As an author I wil say that people's ratings are 100% valid. If you hate the book, you should be able to say so. The author needs to learn to accept criticism.

Xiran is currently tanking her writing career due to being incredibly too online and also entitled. watching it go down from afar is quite a trip.
I want my authors to improve . o . / if it's not great, it's not great. But someone else might think it's like Leonardo Da Vinci amount of genius.
2:30 Imagine if we applied this logic to literally anything else. Am i not allowed to express my concerns or be upset with doctors or nurses when I'm not getting adequate care. Are we not allowed to criticize the judicial system simply because so much effort was put into? I cant exactly express it but this feels like white feminism ideology that to want to shift a status quo in a way that benefits you and predominantly people who look like you. It's crazy because so many BIPOC authors are just trying to be seen, and heard and part of the reason they are getting visibility now is from the discourse in book community around medicority and white authors.
If were not supposed to rate books below 3 stars than 3 stars becomes the new 1 star and it will negatively affect books that are actually just fine lol
Ain't every author puts in all that effort and some self-published books have clearly not been edited… but even if they did, the rating is NOT a reflection of effort. I don't even consider it an objective measure of quality. It's how much I personally liked or appreciated it. And I'll share that, and people can see how I've rated other books to see if our taste aligns.

It makes ZERO sense! The TikTok girl begging for nicer ratings made me wheeze a bit. I've been working on my book (duology), The Night-Dwellers, for believe it or not 11 years!! (2014 as a Junior in highschool-present) and am currently struggling to find an editor to help me finalize Book 1 so I can finally self publish it on B&N and Amazon. That said, as an up and coming indie author, I fully understand, accept and embrace the reviews and opinions and criticism of any potential reader. Whether positive, constructive, or negative, I'm ready. I just want to put a story- MY story out there for others to hopefully enjoy.

I HAVE BEEN WRITING A NOVEL FOR 7 YEARS AND DONE 4 SEPARATE FULL REWRITES. If a book is written objectively well and it's just not my cup of tea, sure I'll give it 3 stars. If a book is written clearly hastily, with typos, bad metaphors, problematic takes that the author clearly wants you to support, and unimaginative elements that are obvious products of wanting to just put something out and make money? That's a 1 star book~ hard work does not equate to high quality, friend.
The 3 star minimum is like saying every video you watch on youtube you have to give it a like. Almost as if 'dislike' doesn't exist.

Spoiler alert: I was. But no fr the way you said 'man' managed to convey the exact tone of the pervert author story AND brace me for the amount of ick i was about to feel.
Every book I read starts at 3 āļø which is average. Then if the writing quality, plot quality, pacing, character development is bad, it drops. A 2 āļø I still liked but the author needs to develop their craft more. And better quality aspects of the writing, which positively impacts my reading pleasure raises the number of āļø.
PS Love reading your shelves, we have many of the same books, including Gulag (some seriously heavy reading). Now my shelves are filling up with books concerning the history of Gaza, Israel, Zionism, and more anti-colonialism.
