We REACT to the State of Play! (1/31/24)

It’s time for 2024’s first State of Play presentation! This one has been a rather leaky ship unfortunately so you may already know a thing or two about what to expect, but that won’t stop this reaction train from leaving the station. Let’s mosey!

  1. Some people need to come to terms with the fact Sony has now a more… focal audience. Doesn't change there's little variety, sure, but when you build expectations based on precedent you're harder to dissapoint. I know they're in for the dark, gritty stuff, so I don't feel as bad when they don't do more Gravity Rush or Patapon.

That being said, people saying the SH2 was gonna turn fine should, uh, reconsider. That wasn't looking great and it felt like it missed the point of the original by trying to be more like the RE remakes.

  2. I enjoyed the show. Some pacing issues as usual with a SOP, but a lot of solid gameplay footage shared, especially Stellar Blade. Main complaints are the long-winded DS2 trailer, and the absence of Concord (or any 1st party game, just one would have been good). But a lot of interesting games presented, and giving us another show next week for Rebirth at the end was a nice touch. Hoping the next SOP is even better 🙂

  3. This state of play was A 10/10. Like this was honestly E3 quality in games. 95% of games was actually gameplay and the passing was perfect. Like the longest time they spent was on the final game.

  4. Sonic Generations Remastered with Shadow Generations being an bonus mode caught me by surprised. On one hand, I'm happy to see my favorite Sonic game getting remastered with Shadow Generations being an side mode game. Kinda like Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury in some ways. But on the other hand, I hope the remastered isn't as bad as Color Ultimate or Origins. But knowing Sega, they might. I hope I'm wrong. But we'll see.

  5. I don't get the issue GVG had with the Xbox presentation. It's not a Direct format. They made that pretty clear (though Steve didn't get the memo). And they showed 4 exclusives, including new IP, all coming this year. It was also nice to have a S-E game there. The last time Sony announced a new IP was Ghost of Tsushima in 2017. A game which on the PS4 looks miles better than the Ronin game on PS5, BTW
