The Cult of I AM : The WILD Story of Guy & Edna Ballard's New Age Religious Movement

CW : Anti-s*mitism, f*cism…and me ranting about capitalism (again).

The new age world is murky, filled with ascended masters, violet flames and people talking about their “I AM presence” – but where did all of that come from?

In the 1930’s, Guy & Edna Ballard started their cult of I AM – a new age religious movement and offshoot of Helena Blavatsky’s theosophical teachings, and the work of neo-theosophists like Alice Bailey and C.W Leadbeater. They were guided by the ascended masters – a group of spiritual advisors that Guy, Edna and their son Donald claimed to have direct contact with, including Jesus and St Germain.

But behind the brightly coloured charts and strangely aesthetically appealing artwork, lies a more sinister story, connecting this world of new age woo-woo directly to f*scists and right-wing ideology that’s still very much present to this day.

P.S I’m sorry I disappeared for two months. This video took a LOT of research and reading to put together, and I actually filmed an entirely different version that I wasn’t happy with. Thank you for watching and remembering I exist xoxo

  1. Lol $3 was NOT a bargain in 1935.
That price is equivalent to $63 in 2022 dollars. £47. €57. That shit was EXPENSIVE. Not to mention the fact that it was the height of the Great Depression. These people were pulling this grift while millions stood in bread lines.

  2. conclusions you drew in this video were absolutely earth-shattering. succinctness is not what this sort of exposition is for. thank you one million times over for giving such a detailed, full-scope view into this phenomenon, and bringing it all back around so simply for a down to earth, compassionate and level-headed exploration of why and how this happens, and appeals to so many. this is one of the best things i've ever watched.

  3. Huge fan of the channel, but as a theologian I have to call for clarification re: the New Testament and antisemitism. The NT is explicit in saying ONLY that Jews who did not believe the Nazarene to be the Messiah were incorrect. Coincidentally, that is literally the whole reason there's a division in the testaments. Keep in mind that Christ was a Jew, speaking to Jews, and I am saying this also as a Jew. Our modern conception of antisemitism is informed mostly from historical and cultural president.

  4. Please do a video on the Modern Mystery School. Came to my attention as a friend's ex has become involved with them and they have such a strong sense of cult like behavior and mentality. There seems to be a long and complicated past, with them going through various names but frequent allegations have followed them regardless of name. A lot of ritualistic stuff and when coming to my attention was described as a sex cult. Was so shocked to find no videos breaking down their actions or anything, just their own videos to get people involved in the group.

  7. This was great. I've enjoyed all your well done videos, but this was so much insight wrapped in a well done gift. Keep up the good work. Everything you've presented is such a great Rabbit Hole Mystery, which provides history, fact, and myths about the topic that start a research deep dive of my own.

  9. just wanted to say thanks for making these videos. i grew up with my mother being into a lot of new age ideas on a very surface level basis, and its gotten to the point where my sister and i joke that she'll accidentally join a cult considering she's been in mlms and well… yeah. not to say she wouldn't recognize the signs bc while she made us watch ancient aliens we also watched true crime/cult docus, which funny enough led to my interests in the history of religions and the occult as a whole that pushed me away from it all. even though i say she probably wont fall for it that fear is still very real the more invested she becomes. like i've heard snippets of the seminars and, though i kno she doesn't believe all of it and is just there for the astrology readings, its super alarming to hear borderline q beliefs sprinkled in every so often. this is a long winded way to say ur totally right about all the topics you've covered in various videos being intertwined to the point that its found even among small groups that seem innocent on the surface. after watching these videos it now makes sense as to why thats the case.

  10. Wow, new subscriber just now. I think this is probably the 2nd video I've seen of yours, and I'm really impressed with how in depth you went into everything. As someone who's kind of embarrassed to admit that I've once dabbled into new age woo woo as a fun placebo, I've since been really fascinated and horrified by how much my mindset during that phase could have easily been taken advantage of and lead me toward dark pipelines.

In regards to this particular topic, it's really cool to see how much the information here puts into context of the background of a book I've been trying to get through. This particular book was written by the daughter of Elizabeth Clare Prophet, who you may know left their group not too long after her mother's nuclear war prophecy didn't pan out. I'm thus really looking forward to your implied follow up that would likely focus on the Church Universal and Triumphant sometime. Beyond that, I really need to watch the Helena Blavatsky one as well. I'd also be interested to hear you talk about Phineas Quimby as well.

  11. Really appreciate this! I was recently suggested by a freind to read th I AM discourses, and after getting through some of it I quickly recognized the signs of being culty bullshit! Im a very open minded spiritual seeker, but only legit stuff! Im glad you've saved me the time of reading the rest of that shit, great research!

  12. The New Testament is not antisemitic. Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, was/is a Jew for heaven's sake. All of the Apostles were Jews. The first congregation in Jerusalem was made up of…Jews. The vast majority of the New Testament was written by Jews. Emily I love your channel but you couldn't be more wrong about this one. Have you read the NT? I do not see how you could have read it and come away with this belief.

  13. the speaker here wrongfully accuses Christianity of centuries old “anti-semitism” towards the innocent lambs of Judaism. Well Judaism has an even longer and very hateful history toward Christianity. look into the hateful writings about Jesus and His Mother Mary in the sacred Jewish Talmud. The rabbis teach that Jesus was a heretic and is boiling in a cauldron of excrement in hell. They teach that Mary was a whore made pregnant with Jesus by a Roman soldier. look up the recent history book written by Princeton head of Jewish studies Peter Schafer, a Jew himself, entitled “Jesus in the Talmud” published by Princeton University Press. I say this as many if not most Jews, even to this day, are taught and will say “no that’s not true. the Talmud is talking about a different Jesus and Mary.”. this is false. the Talmud IS saying that about Jesus and Mary. This denial is patently false. the following is an excerpt from a brief overview of Schafer’s book on the Princeton University Press website. look it up:
“The Talmudic stories make fun of Jesus’ birth from a virgin, fervently contest his claim to be the Messiah and Son of God, and maintain that he was rightfully executed as a blasphemer and idolater. They subvert the Christian idea of Jesus’ resurrection and insist he got the punishment he deserved in hell — and that a similar fate awaits his followers.”

  14. Hi Emily, please consider for a future video the rabbit hole of "it is illegal to have a legal name" billboards, its proper wonky and I'm never able to explain it properly to people

  15. An excellent piece, only ruined by the narrator's constant ignorant interjecions about Communism. Perhaps the amount of effort she clearly puts into researching these cults should also be spent on examining the horrors of the Communist/Socialist nonsense she espouses.

  16. Oh my FUCKING god. THE BALLS ON THIS GUY. This man was preaching and straight up said:
    “Step by step:
they have come forth in their power of radiation, full & complete explanation is there for all who will set aside their human intellectual opinions…study it with a desire to know—NOT to find some discrepancy”

  17. I grew up in a fairly Christian household and in this I'm hearing stuff that's similar to what I heard as a kid, no wonder my stepdad is a racist. Also no sex and no garlic? Poor bastards

  18. In the 1980's the Christian Church's used this but called it the health wealth prosperity doctrine. That your faith is lacking if you ate sick or have problems. But the only ones getting rich are the preachers. Remember Jim and Tammy Baker their huge theme park for Christian's. Joel Osteen today.

  20. Glad you're talking about all this, I was part of the UK 'new age' traveller scene back in the 80's/90's, (a label I always hated with it's connotations of being a crystal-hugger), and was aware of the quasi-spiritual delusion that made a Volvo estate with a Tee-pee strapped to the roof rack, an aspirational demonstration of consciousness. There was also the whole Findhorn, South America Nazi connection which created a religious notion that encouraged making money from rubes seeking enlightenment.

This is the same mindset that drove The Turner Diaries, mass shooter, Evangelical conservatism that made it possible for a madman like Trump to bamboozle the disadvantaged of the US into voting against their own best interests.

    Oh yeah…Johnson…

I hate vapid, delusional mental weaklings that prey on those weaker than them. The culture of celebrity is guilty of giving people with nothing to say, a very loud voice.

    P.S. Love what you do.

  22. Thank you for giving me another reason to love Count Saint Germain. I too have a nationalist love for my country and a strong distaste for communists. As a Jew, I must express sadness that there might be any link between Commies and Jews. I love Jews, including Jesus and St. Germain, and of course my own mother. I have to admit that I love capitalism as well. Emily Louise, I don't hold it against you that you are an Elvira knock off. You sound disappointed that some followers of St. Germain might be celibate. I pray that you get all of the appropriate excitement that you want. Peace and love from the white fire and violet flame.
